Stanford GSB Need-Based Fellowships

Stanford GSB fellowships are awarded based solely on a candidate’s financial need. Typically half of Stanford MBA students receive fellowship funds and the average fellowship is approximately $40,000 per year or $80,000 in total awards.

Stanford Business School MBA Application Process

The latest application requirements set by the Stanford Business School MBA admission office are described below.

Candidates are required to write two personal essays. The essays should reflect the true sense of the candidate.

Essay A: What matters most to you, and why?
Candidates are requested to dig deep and identify what matters to them the most.

Essay B: Why Stanford?
Candidates are requested to describe their aspirations and how the Stanford GSB experience will help you realize them.

Note: If a candidate is applying to both the MBA and MSx programs, they should use Essay B to address your interest in both programs.

Both essays combined may not exceed 1,050 words. Stanford recommends up to 650 words for Essay A and up to 400 words for Essay B.

Optional Question 1
Think about times you’ve created a positive impact, whether in professional, extracurricular, academic, or other settings. What was your impact? What made it significant to you or to others? (Up to 1,200 characters, or approximately 200 words, for each example)

Optional Question 2
Tell us about a time within the last three years when your background influenced your participation at work or school. (Up to 1,100 characters, or approximately 180 words)

Stanford requires two letters of references:

  • One reference from a current direct supervisor (or next best alternative) at work
  • One reference from someone else who has supervised your work

Here is a list of questions that a candidate’s referee must address:

  1. How does the applicant’s performance compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples (e.g., what are the applicant’s principal strengths?). (Up to 500 words)
  2. Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (Up to 500 words)
  3. (Optional) Is there anything else we should know? Please be concise.

Here are some tips for the letter of recommendation:

Who can give a recommendation: You will have to provide details of one recommender who can be your reporting manager/ previous manager/ senior colleague/ current client/ previous client/ business partner/ supplier/ auditor etc.

How a letter of recommendation should be written: The recommender should add specific instances/examples of the candidate’s professional work together.

How to send the letter of recommendation: The recommender should send the recommendation from the official email id only. If the recommender does not have an official id – then a proof that you reported / or was supervised by this person should be attached.
